Endometriosis

Naturopath endometriosis hormone balance

Let’s talk about ENDOMETRIOSIS:

This is a SUPER common condition. Endometriosis occurs when endometrial tissue (which is typically found in the uterus) grows outside of the uterine cavity. This tissue responds to hormone changes and will bleed, then cause irritation and inflammation. Eventually, it can also lead to scarring and adhesions in the body.

Some studies estimate that up to 70% of women and adolescents with pelvic pain that does not respond to pain medicines or birth control have endometriosis. Other studies estimate that up to 1 in 10 of ALL reproductive age women have endometriosis.

Common symptoms of endometriosis:

  • Pelvic or abdominal pain

  • Painful periods (especially with pain that starts BEFORE your period and lasts after your period ends)

  • Pain with defecation

  • Pain with urination

  • Difficulty becoming pregnant

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Fatigue

  • Painful ovulation

  • Low back pain

On average, women wait 7-10 years before getting a diagnosis of endometriosis. 7-10 years!

If you have period pain that prevents you from doing your normal activities, causes you to cancel your plans, stay home from work or school, makes you nauseous or even vomit, it’s time to talk to your healthcare provider. Severe period pain may be common, but it is not normal.

If you are struggling with heavy, painful periods, know that birth control and pain medicines aren’t the only treatment option. In my opinion, a well-rounded approach to painful periods and endometriosis includes a conversation around nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep, and targeted botanical and nutrient support.
